teachers strike - Victoria

It was so nice to see the striking teachers marching in their 'communist'
red tops today, chanting "What do we want? ........ When do we want it?".
I'm sure their students could have written a better chant for them.

"It's not O.K. to be away" is what the teachers try to instill in their
students. Oh dear!

On the other hand, there's no upper limit on profit, or rent, or
interest. Capitalism is profligate (ie. uneconomic) about everything -
except wages; which is where it becomes very frugal indeed.
Still, you have a point, and the standard chants of marching unionists
do border on the ludicrous.
What too is the rationale? That Victorian teachers are the lowest paid
in the nation? Could be a case for dropping the pay of all the others?
And if nurses, police, teachers (etc) all get a similar pay increase,
with prices rising accordingly, we are back to Square One.
"Inflation" is a key factor; what it is, and how to control it, is a
matter for debate and study. Is it a Law of Nature, or merely a defect of
the capitalist system?

Education Act, Victoria Vic. State Govt is to review the Education Act, and has allowed less than two months for submissions (see "The Age", editorial, 17/2). Legislation is scheduled for spring session of Parliament. The Act was last reviewed in 1958.
