I'm sure a lot of international students would feel differently about their
Institute,
if they knew that ALL of their Internet traffic is being captured and stored
on expensive IBM [not gigabyte, but] terrabyte storage units in the EDS-run
comuter facility.
By contrast, the University of Adelaide's computer facility does -not- deem
such surveillance essential to its educational purposes.
(Only summary data is retained, ie just enough to discover the source of
any network abuse, but not enough to see who's sending, eg, love eMail
messages to whom, et al. as Adel. Institute of TAFE can do, in principle,
if not legally. Perhaps there are bribes to be received for keeping track of
some students' contacts...? Perhaps not, but why keep what one doesn't
need?)
SA tax-payers might also like to add their weight to the debate on
how best to spend their money... expensive SAN storage or other
services (eg, reducing hospital queues...)
