What is your objective in doing the course? I would suggest if your
objective is to learn and you have the right attitude the best thing
to do if you want to learn how to do web programming is to pay for a
cheap hosting account (you can get a relatively huge development space
for $8 per month), register a domain name, (yearly fee of maybe $15)
and then learn development by actually doing it. A hosting account
like this will come with mysql databases and a php development
environment so you will be free to do whatever you want.
Have a look at the 'cpanel1' package here which comes with everything
you need including mysql for just the cost of a meal.
http://www.affordablehost.com/cpanel.shtml
So for a very small outlay of far less than the cost of a course you
will be having real hands-on experience in a real hosting environment.
Once you have set up your webspace with your domain and know how to
upload files then you are away !
I only have experience in php so I am not sure what is going on with
asp but in the world I inhabit php seems to be predominant.
There are absolutely heaps of places on the net where you can study
and learn php. If you want you can buy a reference book. there are
plenty of forums that discuss the best book(s) to buy.
I do not think it is a good idea to do a course because it can hold
you back and give you bad habits. It is only good to do a course in
something like php if you require the certificate or credentials to
get a job.
some free tutorials here:
http://www.freewebmasterhelp.com/tutorials/php/
http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/programming/php/tutorials/tutorial4.html
Some of the many forums I discuss and learn about php include:
the alt.php newsgroup
http://www.phptalk.com
http://www.sitepointforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=34
I know it can seem like a huge mountain if you have no idea what to
do. But you just have to read, ask questions, don't be discouraged,
and soon your knowledge will start doubling weekly.
The hardest part for me was to just get the very first script to work.
The very first meant that I had found
how to run a script. From there you can copy, run and analyse free
code from many places in the net.
Also use google search engine to look up answers to your questions
such as 'free php tutorials' 'free php scripts' etc.
Also, I don't live in Sydney so I don't know where there are any
suitable courses anyway.
Good Luck. |

Thanks a lot for all your advice.
Really appreciated it.
Yes, sounds like course is not a good idea. Well, I will try to get myself
together and teach myself php.
thx again.
