Open Source Software for Choice in Education

We expect more than one brand and style of vehicle in the schools,
& we should be demanding similar variations in their computer labs.

Linux, FreeBSD, et al. should be as available as Microsoft software.

Has anyone recently explored Open Source software's use in schools?
What were your experiences?

I have not seen any, but if I get half a chance this red neck left wing
radical will promote alternatives to Micro$oft.

I have the impression that most school teachers are struggling with IT,
so I am not surprised that I have not seen Linux in schools.

I use OS/2 which most IT professionals think is an old version of Apple
OS.

OS/2 - no longer supported by IBM (but, then, Windows 98 SE
will soon lose Microsoft's support, as well) - is an excellent system,
as you know, quick & reliable.

Like Open Source software, OS/2 has a community of users,
who have taken over where IBM left off, ie to support current
users & possibly even current developers.

Now, IBM has made a big investment in the Open Source
operating system Linux... I wonder if IBM will embrace the
Open Source concept enough to release the source code
of OS/2 someday...? 'hope so!
