Here's an interesting one.
How well do you think Australian schools are prepared to provide
appropriate curricula for students from culturally diverse
backgrounds?
I mean, we've got lots of immigrants in detention centres,
not to say that Australia is largly multicultural.

That's a very myopic view of culture! I believe "when in Rome etc.", but
you still need to be able to be free to identify with your background. I
have had the opportunity of living and working in a non-western culture, and
yes, it was a culture shock at first, but I learned that some cultures are
much stronger than our Australian culture. We need to be tolerant of things
we do not understand fully!

All students should be schooled in Western values, which are the best
values. |

To me "appropriate curricula for students from culturally diverse
backgrounds" is different from "western values" |

From a prac teacher point of view... there are far too many
pressures on teachers at the moment with the changing curriculum
moving towards outcomes, which is far more work when beginning.
Overseas students in Australia should consider themselves
lucky for being here and they should learn to adapt to our
education system as it is. I know this sounds harsh, but Australia
is like the nicest country in the world to everyone else on
this Earth, and for once I think we need to say, "Okay, we
are pretty busy trying to sort out education for our own citizens,
if you want to live here, then you are going to have to get
used to it."
I believe this is a fair attitude to have as a country. We
can be accepting and try to make other cultures feel welcome,
but changing our own schooling culture to suit others is out
of the question.
