Integrating technology in the classroom can be very challenging. Can anyone
give me some success stories or suggestion of ways to successfully incorporate
technology into the classroom?

I now do all my math testing online. There is a good non-commercial
(no-ads) educational site http://www.thatquiz.com that offers quite a
lot of math tests for the elementary school level. Teachers can
register and get complete grading. I don't have to grade quizzes anymore!

I went to http://www.thatquiz.com and experimented with the math
testing on the main site. I liked the idea that kids could test their
skills on it, however, I found one disadvantage. I did not like the
fact that once you entered your answer, you were automatically sent to
the next question. I feel that a lot of kids may accidentally press
the wrong number and will not have an opportunity to correct their
answer. Do you have problems with your kids doing this, especially
when they are taking a quiz?
I think that this website would be very useful for the kids to
practice their skills but I do not think that I would use it for
testing. Another program I have used is Math Blaster, which is a
series of CD-rom math games. It allows the student to practice their
math skills while playing games. |

Laura,
True, they can't go back and change their answers. I haven't used
thatquiz.com for major tests -- another disadvantage is that you can't
combine the different quiz types (fractions, geometry) to form a larger
test with different kinds of questions.
Still, for what it does -- efficient online quizzing and automatic
grading for me -- I have been very happy with it.
The students DO have to be careful which button they press. At first,
I was seeing a lot of wrong answers which were typos -- someone fat
fingering the wrong key -- but it has also been teaching the kids how to
use a computer and how to make sure they press the right key. They have
been getting better.

I teach fifth grade in Carlsbad Ca.and find that Math Blaster is a good program
as well. For my ELL students I have used all kinds of elementary software that I
get donated because the kids have outgrown it. There are also good sites on
internet for worksheets and materials for students who don't speak english. I
had student from Russia and the use of the computer and peer helpers was a life
saver. |

Javier,
I agree with using thatquiz.com to expose kids to computers. It is
obviously an important skill that they should be familiar with and I
think that this website is a good way to getting kids experience with
computers and using the internet. I also agree it would be beneficial
to be able to combine some of the subjects to make a more
comprehensive activity. I only wish that you could press enter or
click on a button when moving on to the next problem. That would make
the website a very good testing source.
