Are there any educational computer games that appeal to teenage boys;
something other than the mindless shootemup games that mysteriously
appear on classroom computers?

REal-time strategy games. Still shoot-em-up, but requires planning and
serious decision-making. Microsoft sells a few that pretend to contain
history lessons too.
